NHS waiting times rise amid cuts, reports the King's Fund.

 NHS waiting times are rising as the financial strain on the healthcare system begins to show, according to a report published last week (April 20 ). New figures from the health charity The King’s Fund reveal that NHS waiting times are at their highest level for three years with nearly 15% of hospital inpatients waiting more than 18 weeks for treatment in February 2011.

Curbing Cholesterol Helps More Than Your Heart

 Keeping cholesterol levels low is something that most GP's  are very hot on – mine certainly is – and despite recent articles on chocolate helping with cholesterol most remain unconvinced. However there is a new product to help lower cholesterol and that it seems will also help the body’s immune system fight viral infections, according to researchers at the University of Edinburgh.

Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) & VAT to increase

From 04 January 2011 the VAT rate will increase from 17.5% to 20%. Also Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) will increase from 5% to 6% & IPT on individual travel insurance will increase from 17.5% to 20%.

Standard Life Healthcare receives offer.

On 11 May 2010 Discovery Holdings Limited ('Discovery') of South Africa agreed to acquire Standard Life Healthcare for £138m. Discovery plans to contribute the purchase to PruHealth, its UK joint venture with the Prudential.
